Build Quality and Design
The juicer features a BPA-free construction with plastic and some stainless steel on the base.
Some parts like the safety locking latches feel fragile and like it wouldn’t take much for them to break. Other parts feel likely to break if dropped by accident.
So with the questionable durability in mind, you may get at least a good 12-18 months out of the juicer with moderate use and proper care.
The 3-inch wide “Big Mouth” feed chute will help cut down on juicing time by letting you put in most kinds of produce without needing to cut everything into smaller chunks.
The feed chute is touted as “extra wide”, but I’m not so sure about that. Anything larger than a medium-sized apple will still need cutting. So, for example, large apples, beetroots, and tomatoes may prompt you to get your knife action on.
With everything attached, the juicer clocks in at 7 pounds, 14 inches tall and 12 inches wide, making it a comparatively small centrifugal juicer which won’t take up so much of your kitchen countertop space.
The 20 fl. oz. juice container and serving pitcher is a notable drawback if you’re thinking about making large quantities of juice at once, as you will need to interrupt your juicing to replace it.
Juice Quality and Yield
Overall, the Hamilton Beach 67608A produces an okay quality juice with good taste. Depending on what you juice, there will be some noticeable pulp in your drink.
While the juicer also makes a lot of froth, most of it is held back by the accompanying juice container when you pour.
As a tip for kale lovers, some reviews mention when you juice kale with this model, always follow up with a mix of hard produce (e.g. carrots, apples, etc.) and greens as to prevent the kale pieces from getting stuck and being thrown around.
Keep in mind this juicer only has one “high-speed” setting, which makes it less ideal for juicing soft produce and citrus fruits.
Performance and Noise
Driven by an 800-watt motor, this juicer is powerful enough to deal with most produce.
As you will see in the video, the motor can sound a bit rough when turning on and switching off.
This model can however still be a bit finicky depending on what kind of produce you’re juicing.
While it generally handles hard produce well, you can run into a problem when throwing in chunks and immediately trying to push them with the food pusher.
What happens, is that the juicer is prone to bouncing especially when you force down chunks of carrot.
One user suggested to mix or wrap hard produce in greens, as it will soften the impact on the filter mesh basket, and use your hand to gently guide the produce in before finally using the food pusher.
Another person suggested also placing a dish towel on the countertop beneath the juicer. This prevents the juicer from bouncing and moving.
One complaint I kept coming across is the juicer’s loud performance, a few saying it’s louder than a vacuum cleaner when running.
So if you have grumpy neighbors nearby or live in an apartment with poor noise isolation, you may not want to use this juicer on mornings or late evenings. A quieter juicer like the Cuisinart CJE-500 Compact Juice Extractor may be a better option if loud noise is a deal-breaker for you.
Is It Easy to Use?
The Hamilton Beach 67608A is very easy to use once assembled. Disassembly is also straightforward.
It has a single button serving as the on/off switch.
The 3-inch wide feed chute allows you to get away with not cutting most produce, but you will still run into the odd apple now and then that doesn’t fit without pre-cutting.
Remember to always let the motor run first before putting in any produce!
Is It Easy to Clean?
Overall, this model is easy to clean and all detachable parts are dishwasher safe on the LOWEST temperature only.
However, one challenge you may experience, and more so with this juicer than any centrifugal juicer, is with cleaning the stainless steel filter mesh basket as this part can be very stubborn to brush clean depending on the kind of produce you juiced.
To speed up cleaning time, I highly recommend you outfit the pulp container with a plastic garbage bag to collect the pulp. Once finished juicing, just remove the bag and either use the pulp for something else, compost it, or dispose of it all.
Also, going back to the tip of placing a dish towel beneath the juicer, I strongly recommend you do this because this juicer has a reputation for leaving exhaust-burn-looking black marks on light colored countertops.
Those marks can be difficult to clean off!
Should I Buy the Hamilton Beach 67608A Big Mouth?
If you’re a beginner looking for a cheap juicer to get started with, a juicer that…
- is small enough to fit on kitchen countertops
- is easy to use
- is powerful enough for most produce and makes an “okay” quality juice with a bit of froth and pulp
…then you should consider the Hamilton Beach 67608A Big Mouth.
I will say that with this model you should almost expect to experience a few quirks here and there (like the bouncing and rough noises when juicing carrots).
But, outside of the little quirks, many have had a positive experience.
Good luck!
