Build Quality and Design
The Black & Decker JE2200B Juice Extractor is made of plastic and stainless steel and, yes I’m going to say it again, check out the price! You’re not likely to find many juicers cheaper than this and if you do, you are probably going to count them on one hand.
Let’s not make out that you get all the qualities you would with an expensive flagship juicer at 10% of the price because you’re not and that’s OK. Sometimes you just want the functionality of something and at the same time, you’re willing to put up with a few drawbacks for the sake of the price.
This is a simple centrifugal juicer and everything snaps together quickly and easily and it works.
It’s an upright design and remarkably small at 8.7 x 9.3 x 13 inches when it’s all put together so if space is an issue this is certainly worth looking at.
The plastic is not BPA-free so if this is important to you then make a note of this when looking at the pros and cons of making a purchase.
The fruit and vegetable feeder is surprisingly small and crescent-shaped. You have to slice an average-sized strawberry in half to get it into the chute. The same with carrots, most have to be cut in half length-ways in order to fit. This means you’ll need to prepare all of your produce in advance before you start juicing which is something you don’t have to do with the Breville BJE200XL Compact Juice Fountain.
Remember if you’re preparing apples, cut them as the last piece of food as they oxidize quickly.
Juice Quality and Yield
Juice from hard fruits and vegetables are going to come out best with this juicer and will give you great results. My favorite standbys are:
- Apples
- Beets
- Carrots
- Cucumber
- Ginger
- Pears
- Pineapple
You’ll find this is where centrifugal juicers really shine and the pulp is quite dry.
Soft fruits like grapes, tomatoes and such do juice, but the pulp here tends to be wetter. Having said that I was surprised as to how well it juiced oranges of all sizes.
It doesn’t do leafy greens too well either but this is a characteristic of all centrifugal juicers.
The big tip in the juicing world is to fold leafy greens like kale and spinach before feeding them into the chute and this certainly makes a difference but nothing like the yield you get from a masticating juicer. One user tried a bunch of flat-leaf parsley and only got some drops of juice which illustrates the point about leafy greens.
As I said, these kinds of juicers just don’t excel in these areas and that’s OK. Just stick to what you know it’s good at and you’ll be fine and so will the juicer.
Performance and Noise
I would say the Black & Decker JE2200B Juice Extractor is as loud as any other centrifugal juicer. They are all quite loud and for how they work you would expect them to be. It whizzes through hard fruits and vegetables very swiftly. One user was particularly taken aback by the speed this machine dealt with carrots and apples.
I wouldn’t really recommend this juicer if you plan to use it every day and you’re starting out on a serious juicing program. If I were going to do that, I’d spend more money and buy a more expensive juicer.
If this isn’t you and you plan on juicing occasionally or you just want to see what all the juicing fuss is about, then definitely look at this model.
Is It Easy to Use?
This is an area where this machine doesn’t score highly. The food chute is an awkward crescent shape and it’s also small at 1.25 x 2 inches. Things like carrots need to be cut lengthways, sometimes more than once. Orange segments need to be separated and if you have a big orange sometimes a segment won’t even fit.
Because of this, you absolutely must pre-cut and prepare all of your vegetables. If you factor all of this in as part and parcel of using this machine, then it’s fine.
Is It Easy to Clean?
After you’ve finished juicing, everything comes apart quickly and easily. There are six pieces that need to be cleaned and they can all go on the top shelf of your dishwasher.
I do find it impractical that you can’t remove the cutter/strainer component without first removing the pulp separator from the main unit. See image below:
Some users have complained that juice and pulp mysteriously leaks beneath the pulp separator, which requires cleaning with a damp cloth because the motor housing component can’t be submerged.
Also, it’s worth noting a lot of pulp is trapped in the clear cover as well as going into the pulp container and as questionable as this is, and while not a big deal, it can increase cleaning time. You can almost treat this like having two pulp containers.
Unlike most juicers, the Black & Decker JE2200B doesn’t come with a brush so you’ll either need to invest in one or at the very least use a toothbrush!
Cleaning the cutter/strainer with a brush will increase its longevity.
Should I Buy the Black & Decker JE2200B Juice Extractor?
If you want to see if juicing is for you then you really can’t go wrong buying the Black & Decker JE2200B Juice Extractor. This wouldn’t be your second or third juicer, nor would it be a juicer you use every day, you’d buy this to experience an introduction to juicing.
You can feel the quality is not the same as more expensive juicers but then again, it’s not pretending to be something it isn’t.
It juices and does a good job at it. It’s also great if space is an issue for you and you’re going to juice three or four times a week. If you then want to get serious, you can consider upgrading.
For the price, it’s definitely worth a look.
