How to Choose the Best Dental Floss
You may be thinking “Should I really floss every day? Of course, the answer is yes! In fact, in 2016 it was said that over 30% of Americans say they don’t floss!
But flossing is key to good dental hygiene, and picking the right floss for your teeth and lifestyle is just as important.
Many people have what they’d call “sensitive gums,” which means their gums are prone to pain or bleeding after certain activities, like flossing.
Most of the time, people assume that the vigorous movement against their gums is causing this, but did you know that some chemicals in floss and floss wax can cause gum irritation?
It’s true! That’s why the best way to go is to use all-natural floss products.
Deciding on your floss depends on your preferences and how sensitive your gums are.
For most, a flavored floss (usually mint) is the best option as it leaves the mouth feeling fresh and clean.
In some cases, you might prefer a less flavorful floss. This is all personal opinion and will not affect the flossing capabilities of most dental flosses.
The next thing to decide is the size of your floss. I prefer a thinner floss, as I have teeth that are tight so have minimal space between them!
Others need a thicker piece of floss that’ll capture more plaque in a shorter amount of time.
For me, the comfort of my own teeth is more important than a quick flossing time, but the decision is ultimately up to you and how you’d like your flossing experience to be.
Lastly, consider the amount of wax on the floss, and what wax type is used.
Wax helps the floss glide between your teeth with less effort. A couple of these products contain a lot of wax.
Some people aren’t bothered by this and some are but if you don’t mind then consider all of them!
What Are the Advantages and Benefits of Vegan-Friendly Dental Floss?
There are multiple benefits to using a vegan-friendly dental floss!
Switching to an all-natural floss may help with gum irritation often caused by chemicals or strange ingredients in other floss brands.
Not only this, but you might see a drastic difference in your oral health as natural floss products are great for picking up plaque and removing bacteria from between the teeth.
Aside from oral health, however, switching to a natural floss helps support cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, and eco-friendly companies!
None of these flosses have been tested on animals, nor do they include animal by-products in their ingredients.
All of the waxes used on the flosses are plant-based, hence these products are a better way to achieve a healthy mouth while supporting your vegan lifestyle.
As for the brands being eco-friendly, these flosses are a safe alternative to plastic and help reduce your carbon footprint.
I try to recycle and compost whenever possible, and while some of these brands haven’t been tested for composting, they all make a grand attempt to cut back or eliminate plastic to help the environment.
Ingredients to Look For In Your Dental Floss
Always be aware of the ingredients in your oral care routine!
While all the ingredients are natural, this doesn’t rule out some ingredients which may cause allergies, as natural ingredients may also cause adverse reactions.
Pay attention to all ingredient lists to make sure they don’t contain anything you may be allergic to.
Some of the best ingredients in your dental floss are plant-based waxes and extracts that promote healthy gums.
These will be the plaque-fighting agents in the floss, which is exactly what you’re looking for!
Keen on flavored wax? Then be sure to choose flavors from vegan-friendly ingredients and avoid any that may use the term “artificial,” as these chemicals may cause gum irritation.
4 Top Picks for Vegan Dental Floss Brands
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive right in! I’ll walk you through some of the best dental floss brands I’ve been able to find.
RADIUS Mint Floss
No products found.I do have to say, the word “soft” was a bit odd to me when referencing floss, but it didn’t seem to make much of a difference as I didn’t think it was softer than any other floss I’ve used.
That being said, RADIUS’ floss was great! Radius brags that they use no artificial flavors or ingredients, and you can tell the difference.
Xylitol (plant-based flavoring) is the main flavor ingredient in the floss, and it’s one of the best mint flavors I’ve ever experienced.
It felt fantastic on my gums and easily moved through my teeth.
My mouth felt exceptionally clean afterwards. One thing I didn’t like, however, was the amount of wax on this particular floss.
Some of the wax would come off between my teeth, which inevitably defeated the purpose of flossing, but I think people with less tightly spaced teeth would have no issues with it.
What We Like
- No artificial flavor
- Amazing mint flavor
- Good for sensitive gums
- Texture helps pull plaque out
What We Don’t Like
- Too much wax
- Strands can split apart
Eco-Dent uses essential oils to assist with removing plaque and bacteria, and being an essential oils junkie myself, I just had to try it!
I was impressed with this premium dental floss! Unlike some of the others, this didn’t shred at all.
Again, as I have issue with thick floss due to my tight teeth, I didn’t find this brand catching at all.
It’s not as thin as some of the others, but the oils seemed to help slide the floss through.
The mint flavor wasn’t much to write home about, as it faded from my mouth rather quickly, but it did leave my mouth feeling clean which is the entire point.
Overall, this is a great brand for people looking to incorporate more essential oils into their lifestyle.
What We Like
- Light mint flavor
- Good for tight teeth
- Essential oils
- Leaves mouth feeling clean
What We Don’t Like
- Not a strong mint flavor
- Floss is quite wide
Cocolab COCOFLOSS Coconut-Oil Infused Luxury Dental Floss
No products found.Something I really love about CocoFloss is it’s designed by dentists. The people that know what works and what doesn’t!
The packaging is 100% made from recycled paper which is really fantastic. The floss itself is infused with coconut oil which is naturally anti-microbial.
CocoFloss claim you’ll see results immediately, and along with many of the reviews, I can confirm this is the case. The plaque literally fell off!
One container lasts for approximately 2 months (contains 32 yards of floss) and if you purchase a set, you have a year’s supply!
Cocofloss doesn’t contain polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) known to be an irritant and bad for the environment so that’s a big plus!
The floss itself can be a little wide and I think you need to practise to get the best results. Some users reported the fibres caught in their teeth.
What We Like
- Packaging made from recycled paper
- Just enough wax
- Lovely flavor
- Infused with coconut oil
What We Don’t Like
- Floss too wide for some
- Non refillable
Organix South Neem Dental Floss – Mint
This floss is great for those who have small crevices between the teeth just like me! It’s super thin.
Organix South’s Neem Dental Floss is infused with extracts from the nimtree, which has medicinal and antibacterial properties.
I really enjoyed this floss! The minty flavor is accompanied by an earthy taste, I assume added by the nimtree extract.
This may turn some people off, but I thought it made a great addition to the floss.
I did have an issue with the floss breaking on me several times, but I was able to get past that after a few practice rounds.
This floss is great for anyone who may want a unique floss flavor, and also for anyone who enjoys extremely thin floss!
What We Like
- Great flavor
- Uses natural nimtree extracts
- Thin floss
- Does not have artificial taste
