Determine Your Skin Type before Choosing a Concealer
If you’re new to concealers, don’t let that scare you off. Choosing the right one for your skin is actually straightforward!
There are tons of different brands and they all have different formulas.
My personal favorites will usually always end up being vegan-friendly and cruelty-free since they don’t gunk up your skin with foreign chemicals.
The first thing you’ll want to figure out is your skin type. Do you have oily skin? Or do you constantly feel like you need to moisturize due to dryness?
In some cases, you may find you have both. This means you have combination skin, a mix of oily and dry on different parts of your face.
If you aren’t sure, the best way to find out is to pay attention to your face throughout the day after washing it in the morning.
Paying attention to the condition of your skin is important for finding the best concealer. It may seem a bit overwhelming, but fear not, there’s a concealer for everyone.
Once you’ve determined your skin type, you’ll be well on your way.
Things to Look for in a Concealer
The best concealers will be the products that are full-coverage and use natural, vegan-friendly ingredients.
You’ll also want to be aware of any concealers using hydrating ingredients in them, especially for those with dry skin.
Good hydrating properties are natural oils, waters, and vitamins or minerals. This will help keep your skin revitalized and prevent your pores from becoming dry and building up toxins or bacteria.
If you have oily skin, you may be wary about using moisturizing products, but this’ll be beneficial to your skin in the long-run, as oily skin becomes oilier when it’s not properly hydrated, so be sure to keep using naturally moisturizing concealers and face products.
The Advantages and Benefits of Vegan-Friendly Concealers
Many companies still test their products on animals. By switching to vegan and cruelty-free brands, you’re actively withdraw your support toward animal suffering.
Not only does switching to these brands save animals, it’s generally also better for your skin!
Many vegan products include ingredients to help moisturize and protect your skin.
Sensitive skin can be affected by harsh chemicals, and this can cause breakouts or allergic reactions.
Hydration is especially important when it comes to applying face makeup, as it prevents wrinkles and discoloration down the road.
The better products you use now, the less concealer you’ll have to use later!
What’s the Best Way to Use Concealers
Foundation can be applied over a concealer and the other way around, too.
To use a concealer, you’ll want to target problem areas. For me, it’s my chin and dark circles around the eyes.
These problem areas will be where you place the concealer as much as you need for coverage.
If you’re experiencing acne or discoloration, these areas will be where you’ll want to focus.
For acne or any discoloring, dab small amounts on these areas.
Precautions When Using New Concealers
Your skin can be complex as many people notice their skin changing throughout the day or according to certain activities or environments and even seasons.
When purchasing a new product, it’s important to pay attention to the ingredients listed.
I have to be careful about what lotions and soaps I purchase due to allergic reactions.
If you’re unaware of any allergies, it’s still important to test out the product on a patch of skin that’s not located your face as you obviously wouldn’t want to have a reaction show up there.
5 Top Picks for Vegan Concealers
Now that you’re better prepared to tackle concealers, let me show you some worthwhile brands you should give a try!
Emani Vegan Cosmetics Full Coverage Concealer
Emani’s full coverage concealer blew me away! They include six shades in their concealer line, and the one I purchased was perfect for my skin tone.
This concealer is infused with Vitamin C, which revitalizes all skin types; great for oily, dry, and combination skin.
The Vitamin C and moisturizing properties are especially incredible, as it doesn’t cause any pimple breakouts.
The formula is lightweight, I felt absolutely nothing on my skin, which is great, since no one wants to feel like they’ve caked-on their concealer!
One thing I’ll say, though, is that six shades isn’t a wide range, and may not cover all undertones.
But if you’re able to grab one of these close enough to your skin tone, it’s definitely worth it, especially if you suffer from oily and acne-prone skin.
What We Like
- Very hydrating
- Lightweight formula
- Good for acne prone skin
- Caters to all skin types
What We Don’t Like
- Only six shades
- Doesn’t cater to all undertones
Pacifica Beauty Blemish Banish Concealers
No products found. Now, Pacifica Beauty’s concealer works a bit different than the other concealers in this roundup, but it’s definitely worth the mention.
I sometimes wake up with dark circles under my eyes and these color correcting concealers saved me a lot of trouble in my makeup routine!
The packaging is absolutely adorable, and the formula is phenomenal. Each color corrects a different unwanted color on the face: green for redness, pink for dullness, and yellow for blue undertones.
The product was creamy and sat incredibly well on my skin, and just a little dab goes a long way, so it’ll last awhile.
I will say, I was a little taken aback putting green on my face, but once I put my foundation over it, my dark circles and red spots were gone!
I’d highly recommend this to anyone attempting to cover dark circles, acne scars, or any discoloration of the face.
What We Like
- Creamy product
- A little goes a long way
- Incredible coverage
What We Don’t Like
- Requires foundation
- Can crease in some areas
Pacifica Beauty Transcendent Concentrated Concealer Natural
Pacifica, along with their color correctors, offers a concealer for full coverage as well. These products were incredibly easy to use!
The wand applicator makes for a wonderful addition, helping me to get into the corner of my eye to fully cover my dark circles.
The formula is very liquified as it goes on, making spreading incredibly easy!
Not only did the product work wonderfully on my skin, it also had a great fragrance from the coconut water that’s part of the ingredients.
The only issue I have is, I found it to be slightly too dark once on my skin, but I’d still recommend it to anyone seeking an easy-to-apply product with a lot of coverage!
What We Like
- Works on all skin types
- Acne-friendly
- Amazing for dark circle correction
- Beautiful matte finish
What We Don’t Like
- Darker than expected
- Only two shades
CLOVE + HALLOW Conceal + Correct
CLOVE + HALLOW’s concealer formula has hit the nail on the head!
Including ten shades, they’ve sought to include a ton of undertones in their collection, which works incredibly well for my cool skin tone.
As I wore this concealer, I didn’t even realize it was there! The product feels so light on the skin, and it doesn’t cake around the eye area, nor does it create an excess amount of grease, which is great for everyone with oily skin.
It does, however, require a setting powder to go over it if worn without foundation, as it doesn’t bind to the skin well enough to not fade over an entire day.
But I found with a basic setting powder, I was able to get through a full day no problem.
What We Like
- Creamy texture
- Doesn’t cake
- Doesn’t get greasy
- Light formula
- Lots of undertone shades
What We Don’t Like
- Needs to be set
- Can potentially fade over time
BaeBlu Concealer for Face
Twelve full shades, including undertones, wow!
Baeblu has a multitude of cute compact concealers that range in all shades and undertones, so if you have an odd undertone to your skin that’s difficult to match, this concealer will be for you.
While I enjoyed this formula, I wouldn’t recommend this concealer to someone who’s new to using concealers, as it dries quickly on the skin, making it difficult to work with.
But for those looking for a concealer that assists in anti-aging, this one is the ticket! The natural ingredients promote younger, healthier skin and will help prevent wrinkles from forming over time.
With virtually no smell, this concealer goes on smooth and stays completely non-greasy through the day, perfect for anyone who’s looking to wear a heavier concealer.
What We Like
- Long-lasting
- No weird smell
- Anti-aging ingredients
- Doesn’t get greasy
- Perfect for all skin types
- Lots of shades
What We Don’t Like
- Not easy to work with
- Heavier than expected

I go with this one due to its ability to cover up more than one type of discoloration on the face.
For someone like me who has several problem areas on my skin, this one beat out the rest! It has amazing full-coverage and is comprised of good, cruelty-free ingredients.
Another thing I enjoyed about this concealer is that it doesn’t require any specific skin tone to use, while the others can be difficult to color match to certain skin tones, which is an issue many women face, including myself!
